I have recently talked about my struggle with my yoga practice. What I wasn’t expecting was that the universe was going to bring yoga back into my life through an injury. Between the long mileage bike rides, surfing, and daily workouts (see pick above), my body was in pain. My worst pain was in my shoulders and back. It was even hard for me to get up out of bed in the morning.
While sitting on the couch with a heat pack, I started to think of other ways to help my pain. Instantly, I thought of Yin Yoga, otherwise called Restorative Yoga. Yin Yoga is a floor practice where poses are held for long periods of time. I thought this is the class I need so I immediately picked up an afternoon Yin Yoga class.
When I walked into the class, I was a little out of my comfort zone since I didn’t know what I would need. I picked up a bolster, blocks and a blanket knowing that my shoulders and back would need a lot of support. The class started and it was intensely restorative and releasing. My back and shoulder pain was reduced, and I was able to get my mobility back.
Maybe this injury is what I needed to get me back on track in Yoga. Readers, have any of you tried Yin Yoga?

Sorry you are injured! I definitely think yoga is the right move. I sometimes go to a restorative yoga class, but they don’t necessarily classify it as yin yoga. I also suffer from back pain and I always find that it helps. Hopefully you will find your way back into practice and get some relief!

Yes…Only a few times…I have been told that Restorative yoga is helpful to calm the parasympathetic nervous system…so I am going to try to make this more routine in my life.
